Promoting the visibility and acceptance of members of alternative subcultures within the LGBTQ+ community and LGBTQ+ people within those subcultures.

Announcement (2025-09-15):

For over 15 years, Queer Alternative has been proud to raise awareness of LGBTQIA+ people within alternative spaces, and of LGBTQIA+ alternative people within mainstream LGBT culture. We did this primarily through attendance at Pride events across the country, some years with over 1,000 alternatives joining parades and making noise. We were the dark stripe in the rainbow.

Unfortunately, in recent years it has been hard to gain additional volunteers with the skills and drive necessary to lead the organisation post-Covid. We have also struggled to find sustainable funding to deliver a truly national organisation.

As such, the remaining board members and active volunteers have reached the sad but inevitable conclusion that the time has come to step down and close the organisation.

Any remaining assets will be liquidated where possible, and all remaining funds donated to S.O.P.H.I.E., an alternative-led organisation with very similar aims of stamping out hatred and intolerance everywhere.

We would like to thank everyone who has supported Queer Alternative over the past decade — our volunteers, members, and the wider community — for helping us to raise our voices and make a difference.

Queer Alternative is a UK based grassroots, self funded, volunteer run, small charitable organisation with the following formal Charitable Objectives

The promotion of equality and diversity for the public benefit and in particular:

• A culture of acceptance, visibility and equality for people of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and other minority sexual orientations and gender identities (LGBTQIA+) within alternative subcultures
• The visibility and acceptance of members of alternative subcultures within the wider LGBTQIA+ community particularly (but not exclusively) by:

Raising awareness of the presence of LGBTQIA+ people within alternative subcultures and their specific needs

Encouraging and aiding communication between LGBTQIA+ people in alternative subcultures

Running and supporting events which cater to LGBTQIA+ members of alternative subcultures

For the purpose of this clause, an “alternative subculture” is a type of culture that exists beyond mainstream or popular culture. This could include, but is not limited to, heavy metal, goth, punk, industrial, steampunk, cyber, vintage, hippy and cosplay subcultures.

A white man with short blue hair and a serious expression punches the air in emphasis. He is wearing a pink bandana and a black t-shirt with a white version of the Queer Alternative logo on it. The logo is the words The Queer Alternative and two skulls surrounded by smaller words, (too small to be legible on this image). He is also wearing blue and black camo shorts, a large black, blue and pink tail. The tops of his newrocks are just visible. Behind him are the pillars of Southampton Guildhall and people in the crowd. Two women with red hair hold up a smiling woman with a black top hat and an amazing smile. She is doing jazz hands at the camera and wears a black corset over a check shirt and black leggings with cutout detail down the front, she has blond dreadlocks. The background is mainly dark with city lights in the distance. A person wearing a pride flag headbangs to music from a loudspeaker held up by a person in shades.
